Emergency Preparedness

As with Crime Prevention, PPNA works very closely with Montclair Safety and Improvement Council to build organized neighborhoods that are trained and equipped to respond effectively to emergencies.

PPNA has worked with the City’s C.O.R.E. (Citizens of Oakland Respond to Emergencies) program to bring its emergency training into locations convenient for our residents.  CORE involves three levels of training:

C.O.R.E. I—individual and family preparedness
C.O.R.E. II—neighborhood emergency response
C.O.R.E. III—hands-on training

For an updated schedule, or to register for C.O.R.E., go to their Website, or (510) 238-6351 or e-mail core@oaklandnet.com.

The MSIC Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Response (EPDR) Team operates a network responsible for providing information and assistance on neighborhood organization, emergency preparedness, setting up and leading emergency exercises, conducting radio communications tests, and other similar activities. If you are interested in participating on this team in any capacity, contact MSIC.  The team’s objectives are to:

    • Help Montclair neighborhood groups get trained at the CORE III level.
    • Help neighborhood groups build and manage their Neighborhood Incident Command Center   (NICC)--a central neighborhood gathering place stocked with emergency and first aid supplies.
    • Help neighborhood groups in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from wildfires,   earthquakes, mudslides or other disasters in the Montclair area.
    • Help with establishing and testing Montclair area emergency communication plans, including   using two-way radios and other means of communicating during a disaster.
    • Provide information related to emergency preparedness and disaster planning, such as
guides on home retrofitting, gas shut-off valves, emergency power generation, etc.
The more Montclair Organized Neighborhoods (MONs) that are created and CORE trained, the more we will all benefit by being prepared and self-sufficient.
