I pulled this post off the MSIC list-serve:
Sorry if this is off-topic, but I think it is important to get the message across that we all should know how well your home will withstand the inevitable 'Big One'. I just wanted to share a very positive experience that I had with a local retrofit contractor, James Gillett at Earthquake Construction Service.
There are a lot of retrofitting companies out there that are big on creating fear and urgency, but short on basic construction techniques. Jim will let you know exactly what your home needs, and whether you need an engineer; if you hire ECS, he will also be on the job doing/supervising the work himself (a rarity these days!). He is a local institution who has been doing this work for 30 some-odd years, and he is a great place to start, if nothing else.

PS I have no affiliation with this company; they retrofitted my house after I initially hired a different company. ECS was cheaper and better, and I highly recommend them.
