Goal: Maintain and Improve the Natural and Built Environment

Objective: Create a Master Plan for Castle Canyon

Progress

4/2004: Survey conducted, "How would you like to see the land used?" ( e-mail survey to 464 residents 46 replies). Three themes emerged: leave the canyon as is, create a trail to join Joaquin Miller Park, replace non-native plants with fire retardant landscaping.

10/04: a small group of eco-warriors spent three hours exploring the canyon accompanied by Kirsten Hopper, a dynamic force with the Friends of Sausal Creek. The team discovered fascinating native wildlife, some not-so-great invasive plants, and disheartening signs of homo sapiens (dozens of discarded car tires and assorted garbage). They scouted out possible trail sites, discussed various options for improving the existing creek, and had an enjoyable time in Oakland’s newest parkland.

01/05: Councilmember Quan hosted a community workshop to develop a strategic plan for Joaquin Miller and Castle Canyon parks. Several Piedmont Pines residents participated.

04/05: Team leaders established to guide the volunteer effort to clean up the Canyon on Earth Day, 4/23/05

Committee Lead: Jeff Sharp. Send Jeff an e-mail to join the team.
