And so it goes...

Our Vision
Piedmont Pines will be a scenically beautiful, diverse community dedicated to quality schools, neighborhood safety and living in harmony with our natural environment.

Traffic and Parking Safety

Traffic and parking safety concerns rank high among our association’s membership.  Piedmont Pines has sought voluntary cooperation in eliminating on-street parking that presents a traffic hazard to motorists and pedestrians.  Unsafe parking also prevents or retards access by emergency vehicles.

The following areas have been identified as presenting the greatest parking hazards in Piedmont Pines:

    • Carisbrook between Chelton and Stockbridge
    • Mastlands below Ascot • Thackeray between Westover and Chelsea
    • Girvin between Chelsea and Thackeray
    • Girvin at Chelton
    • Westover between Thackeray and Shelterwood
    • Mountaingate between Ascot and Mastlands
    • Weybridge at Castle
    • Burton above Skyline
    • Wilton at curve above Skyline

Speeding and wreckless driving are also frequently raised by our residents.  The hotspots most often cited include:

    • Skyline Blvd, particularly motorcycle traffic on sunny days.
    • Castle Dr., particularly where it joins Mountaingate
    • Ascot Dr, particularly during school drop-off and pick-up
Several residents along Skyline Blvd formed a task force shortly after a bicyclist was killed by a wreckless motorcycle driver.  The group enlisted the help of several city agencies to beef up enforcement and explore engineering of traffic calming solutions.  They put together an effective education campaign, and worked closely with a motorcycle club to extend the appeal for safety to its members.

It is important to note that PPNA has no policing authority over these matters. However, we feel that forcing neighborhood drivers to dodge and weave around cars parked on the street, often causing them to cross the center line into oncoming traffic, is a traffic hazard we will continue to battle.

In many cases, residents hold some relatively simple solutions, such as:

  • Allowing extra time: most speeders aren’t coming from other areas; WE are the problem.
  • Cleaning out garages and clearing up driveways to free space for cars and eliminate on-street parking.
  • Moving vehicles that are not used on a regular daily basis such as boats, motor homes, etc., into off-street or off-site storage facilities.
  • Reconfiguring landscaping close to the street to create safe, off-street parking.
