Priority

Tasks

Montclair Organized Neighborhoods (MONs)

Lead, encourage and support organizing 100% of Piedmont Pines neighborhoods in order to better respond to emergencies and protect against crime.

Montclair Organized Neighborhoods (MONS)

    • Inventory all neighborhoods as to their current state of organization.
    • Create a MONs map of all PPNA neighborhoods, indicating yes/no organized for each.
    • Adopt MSIC levels of organizing
    • Recruit neighborhood leaders for each not-yet organized area (non-MONs)
    • Motivate and reward each neighborhood to move up the scale toward becoming a fully trained, effective MON.
    • Motivate neighborhood leaders to join and attend MSIC’s MON Leader network to share tips and experiences.
    • Continue liaison with MSIC to spread MONs throughout Montclair, share resources.

    Emergency Preparedness

    • Motivate registration for city-sponsored emergency preparedness training (CORE) and crime prevention training (Neighborhood Watch).
    • Motivate participation in emergency preparedness drills in April (City-wide) and November (Montclair-wide) to practice and elevate skills.

    Crime Prevention

    • Motivate participation in National Night Out (August) to heighten awareness of crime prevention.
    • Maintain liaisons with MSIC’s Crime Prevention Team and OPD to promote adequate OPD response and protection.
    • Educate residents about importance of filing crime reports for tracking/trending
      Alert residents to major crime waves
    • Encourage residents to form MON list-serves and to join MSIC list serve for crime alerts

     

Utility Undergrounding

Manage liaison and communication between City agencies, utilities and residents to keep construction of Phase 1 on track

Ensure implementation of Phases 2 and 3 according to schedule.

Beautification, Wildfire Prevention, Tree Management

Manage an aggressive vegetation management program to reduce fuel loads, return to native plantings, and preserve the natural environment.

  • Marj Saunders Park: scheduled work parties (see calendar)
  • Beaconsfield Canyon: monthly work parties (see calendar)
  • Castle Canyon: yearly work parties on Earth Day
  • Montera/Joaquin Miller schools and paths: twice yearly work parties
  • Partner with Hillside Gardeners, school ecology clubs, Merritt College, Friends of Sausal Creek to reduce fire hazard, replace with native/efficient gardens.
  • Arrange bulk-discount for tree management to assist residents in pruning, removing hazardous trees and preserving views.
  • Partner with Montera site committee and Hillside Gardeners to replant Montera Middle School’s entrance in keeping with new Joaquin Miller’s front garden

Go Green:  Conservation of Resources

Provide residents education, information and references about conservation (replacement windows, insulation, electrical modifications, etc.,) to seriously reduce energy usage.

Provide information about solar panels and how, by grouping together, residents might be able to negotiate a much less expensive option, including various financing mechanisms (benefit assessment district, etc.).

Investigate and provide information about use of water storage tanks for rainwater and the use of grey water for plant watering, and emergency use.  Sharing between households and group purchasing can reduce costs.

Encourage composting

Introduce a safe, non-smelling, non-rodent infested method of composting green waste and re-using in the garden.

Develop composting education plan.

Coordinate annual E-waste and Good Will collection within PPNA

Green Transportation, Traffic, Parking

Improve community transportation options.

Continue working with AC Transit to reinstate service to BART

Investigate carpooling strategies such as Zip cars, on-line scheduling, commuter van to BART and into Village Work with city and Fire Marshall to implement off-street parking plan, making better use of garages and off-street parking areas to reduce pinch points

Develop a Go Green Transportation plan with the schools to increase bus and car-pooling options. 

Work with Montera to reinstitute Student Directory to encourage parents to work out carpooling arrangements

Communication

Keep residents informed about critical issues, events and opportunities for involvement.

Publish e-newsletter every 4 to 6 weeks Distribute e-blast on critical breaking news

Host annual meeting at Chabot Space & Science Center, with expo on conservation opportunities last Monday in January

Host other meetings as needs arise

Maintain website

Maintain database of contact information

Mail invoice and annual meeting agenda annually

Launch emergency call system to alert neighbors of critical events and safety advisories.

Respond to all telephone and e-mail inquiries from paid members within 2 days, and all others as time permits.
