Volunteer:  Help Us Get the Job Done

We’re seeking volunteers to help with entire tasks or any part of the task. 
We’ll tailor the task to your time budget.

Volunteer Tasks Time commitment


Beautification--Contact:


Organize and staff monthly cleanup at Marj Saunders Park 

1 hour  to organize event; 3 hours participation in monthly event

Participate in monthly cleanup at Marj Saunders Park.

2 hours monthly

Organize Earth Day Event every April

4 hours to organize; 5 hours day of event

Organize Creek to Bay Day event every September

4 hours to organize;  5 hours day of event

Drive hazardous waste litter collected at park to collection site in Oakland

1 hour as needed

Pick up litter and clear drains at Marj Saunders Park

depends on rain and litter; once or twice a month at 1 hour at a time

Staff and coordinate Joaquin Miller Elementary School Ecology Club group event at Marj Saunders Park

3 hours monthly

Beaconsfield Canyon: Participate in monthly work parties to restore the creek and canyon, pulling invasive plants, planting natives 3 hours monthly, last Saturday 9 to noon. See calendar for detail and contact info.

Finance --  Contact:

 

 

Processing annual dues payments.  Requires general computer skills/Excel, but can be as simple as helping us open envelopes and organize roster forms/checks.

2 hours per batch (we usually process 12)  doing 2 or more would be very helpful.  Heaviest crunch is February through April.

Assist with check-in at Annual Meeting

2 hours at Annual Meeting (last Monday in January, assistance needed from 5 to 7:30 p.m.)


Communications -- Contact: 


 

 

Intersection signs to announce annual meeting, and other community meetings as they occur.  Graphic design skills would be ideal, but also need someone to work with the vendor to get them printed; post them at intersections 1 week before meeting; pick them up 1 day after meeting.

1 hour per year to design signs
1 ½  hour to work with vendor and pick up printed signs
½ hour to distribute and collect signs

Annual invoice/annual meeting agenda mailer:  Using existing template or creating a whole new look, create the annual dues invoice which also includes the annual meeting agenda, and is mailed the 1st week in January each year.  Work with printer/mail house to keep job on schedule, in budget.

1 hour per year to assemble content, update template
1 hour per year to schedule job with existing print/mail house and follow up.

E-Newsletter:  Develop content for monthly newsletter under direction of Communications Director and Board.  Coordinate design/layout (currently using Constant Contact).  Familiarity with e-mail campaigns, inserting links and images.  Follow list-serves within Montclair for sharable news.

Database of residents:  Knowledge of Microsoft Office Access required.  Input dues payments by address; set up queries, forms and reports as needed, working under direction of Communications Director and Board.  Upload e-mail address changes to e-newsletter vendor.

6 hours per month to input dues/roster changes during February – April crunch.
Other tasks vary according to need.


Montclair Organized Neighborhoods (MONs) -- Contact: 

 

 

Maintain map of PPNA’s Organized Neighborhoods. Knowledge of and access to Adobe Photoshop required.

5 hours to scrub existing map with refined data
Minimal time to maintain.

Help new neighborhoods get organized:  Recruit block captains, participate in initial meetings to get them established with boundaries, a roster, an action plan.

4 hours per neighborhood. 

Scrub existing data on MONs:  Contact each existing PPNA MON to verify boundaries, training completed and other information PPNA tracks.

2 hours to draft and distribute e-mail request
2 hours to follow up and confirm incomplete/missing responses.

Help each MON set up a list-serve that PPNA can feed info into (eg. Crime alerts).  Set leaders up on auto-call distribution on breaking news.

1 hour

Help design annual meeting segment to encourage new MONs and provide status on existing MONs.

2 hours

Establish and maintain communications network with PPNA MON leaders to keep them encouraged, share tips,

2 hours plus monthly maintenance

Develop reward and recognition plan as MONs graduate through levels from 1 (forming) to 5 (fully trained, equipped).

2 hours to research appropriate recognition plan that’s in line with PPNA budget, and to seek Board approval for plan and expenses.
2 hours to purchase awards (distribution plan to be determined).


Support for Schools -- Contact: 
Elain Hofmann

 

 

Serve as liaison to local public schools (Joaquin Miller and Montera) and meet with Principal at beginning of each school year & as needed.

Identify one parent (from PTA or PSFC) to serve as contact with school.

 

Help publicize school events in terms of volunteers, participation, and awareness of upcoming activities.
