Walking Paths

Help Us Build a Safer Route to Our Two Schools

Donate to Joaquin Miller/Montera School Pathway Project
Parents, teachers and neighbors have long desired to build a safer pathway from Joaquin Miller and Montera Schools to Montclair Village. The current narrow, dirt pathway gets muddy and full of ruts during the rainy season and there are no sidewalks to keep pedestrians safe from oncoming traffic.

The project calls for redoing the existing pathway on OUSD property from Joaquin Miller School to the steps at the beginning of Ascot at Mountain, constructing a safe pedestrian landing at the crosswalk at Ascot and Mountain, and installing a 4- to 5-foot wide asphalt pathway from there to Scout Road along Mountain Blvd. The close to $1 million project will be funded by private donations, Council & OUSD contributions, and state grants.

You can help. Make a $100 commitment today: You can write a check for $100; ask your neighbor to match your $50 or three of your friends to match your $25. The City has already raised more than $150,000 in real dollars and commitments. Our goal is to raise an additional $80,000 from the community through individual donations and grants. Piedmont Pines has pledged to match up to $5000 in donations from our residents.

Please help us reach our goal by making a tax-deductable donation to:

Status as of 12/2009:
The City had applied for a $1 million Safe Routes to School Grant last year to cover the cost of installing the proposed pathway from Joaquin Miller/Montera Schools to Montclair Village. The State passed over Oakland this go round, we think because Oakland had been awarded grants two years in a row prior to the 2009-2010 grant cycle. The next state Safe Routes to School funding cycle isn't until 2011. Plans are on hold until new grant funding is identified. Donations from the community for this project are held in a designated account just for this project, and will be used for the local match that are often required by state and federal grants.
